Fish Tank and UK Film Industry Case Study.

  1. All the Institutions involved in the production of Fish Tank. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.
The institutions involved in the production of the film are, BBC films and the UK Film Council. The UK Film Council is known, as helping and representing British films which are on a low budget.

2. Two other Independent British Film production companies – their “brand”, as well as current and previous productions.
One independent British film production company is, 'Working Title Films', which is based in London. They have produced many different films, such as 'Four Weddings At a Funeral', 'Hot Fuzz', 'About a Boy', Shaun of the dead' and many more. This film production is on a low budget, therefore it consists of not  good quality of equipment such as cameras. However, they do use well known actors/actresses, which intrigues the audience to watch their films; this could be their USP.

3. Out of the three Production Companies you have researched, which do you see as most successful and why?
The production company which I researched about is 'Bedlam Production' , which is an independent film and television production company in London. The company most important and successful feature production was for the film 'The King's Speech', which won more than 70 awards worldwide in 2010 and 2012. The reason, why I see this production company more successful compared to the other companies I have researched is because; it is not a low budgeted film company therefore the quality of the films they have produced are good and they are all well known films which have been a real hit to their target audience.

4. How much Fish Tank cost to produce (it’s budget)
The budget for the film was 3 million.

5. Film budgets – find 5 films made for £5 million pounds or less – what types of films are feasible on this budget?
The films below have a budget under £5 million

  • Like Crazy
  • The Inbetweeners Movie
  • Anuvahood
  • Beginners
  • Take Shelter

6. How was Fish Tank funded?
Fish tank was funded by the UK Film Council. The film was supported with the lottery money by the UK Film Council's New Cinema and Development Funds. This was a positive approach as the money would helped to reach a younger audience with online marketing campaign using websites and online virals.

7. Research one other way that British films are funded. Are there any similarities or differences?
One way in which British films are funded is through the UK Film Council. The UK Film Council is successful as they support new filmmakers to ensure that the educational aspects of the film is represented effectively throughout the UK and abroad. This shows, that it is the job of the UK Film Council to decide how the money will be funded in the relation to film. The list below are few examples the UK Film Council provides funding in some areas:
  • Script Development
  • Festivals and audience support scheme
  • Short Films
  • Film Production
8. What is the target audience for Fish Tank?
Personally, I think the target audience for this film would be from the age of 15-20 year olds. This is because, the film focuses more on how the younger generation is represented in society as taking drugs, drinking, being vulnerable and how life is like living in a deprived area; therefore teenagers could relate to this, which makes the film more realistic. Also, the film contains a few sexual scenes therefore it would mostly be suitable for that age group and also as their is a lot of swearing throughout the film, I do not think the target audience would be below the age of 14 year old.

9. Research the mainstream 16–25 youth cinema market and decide which 3 genres are most targeted at them and justify your decisions with your research.
The top and main three genres which majority of 16-25 year olds would watch are; Horror, Comedy and Romance. This is because all three of these genres give the audience entertainment, a sense of relaxation where they can express their emotions and laugh. Also, females would enjoy watching romantic films especially because they could relate to some of the problems also it gives them a sense of escapism from the real world.

10. Who is the main distributor of Fish Tank?
The main distributor of the film is IFC Films (Independent Film Channel)

11. What is the role of a film distributor? Are there any differences between distribution in the US and UK?
The role of a film distributor is to decide how a film should be advertised to the audience such as: posters, magazines, TV adverts, viral ect. Also they decide how many theatres the film will be shown in the commercial adverts, which shows their role is really important to make a film a success therefore more people would want to watch it .
Differences: distribution in the UK would be more low budgeted compared to the US, therefore US distribution would be more budgeted and would be able to buy good quality of equipment.

12. How was Fish Tank promoted (when it was released in 2009)?
The film was promoted in France on May 14th 2009 at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.

13. Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?
Comparing this film with big budget blockbusters the quality would not as good. This is because, 'Fish Tank' is a low budgeted film therefore the equipment used such as the camera, would not be really good compared to big budget blockbusters; also you could tell if a film is low budgeted through the camera movement, setting, and the quality of the film. Whereas, in a big budget blockbuster the quality of the film and production would be much better/clearer as they would have really good camera equipment and the setting would look more elaborate. There is not much of similarities between low and big budget blockbusters however, they both try and target the audience in watching their films.

14. How does the trailer for Fish Tank hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.
The trailer of the film hooks audience into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer is because the trailer highlights a young girl who is living in a deprived area and is experiencing family problems which makes her feel vulnerable, alone, detached; as she is stuck in a position (tank) where she cannot fulfill her dreams. This hooks the audience into the narrative because it shows the problems some teenagers face in society now and the effect it has on them therefore they could relate to the protagonist and what she is going through in the film. Throughout the trailer many enigma codes are used to intrigue the audience to watch the film and makes them wonder what is going to happen later on in the film. The use of parallel sound goes well with the trailer as it makes the audience feel sympathetic to what she is dealing, also the sound towards the end creates a sense of danger, which is to come later on in the narrative.

15. Analyse the trailers for 2 different films (from different genres). Are there any differences in the way they hook the audience into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify at least 2 similarities and 2 differences.

The film 'One Day' would mainly appeal to the female audience from the age of 15-25 year olds. This is because the genre of  film is drama and romance which is typically associated with that demographic group, therefore females would be appealed in watching it. However, the film could attract coupes as well who are in love and just want to spend time with their loved ones by watching the film. The sound used throughout the trailer is parallel as it goes really well with the different scenes, which makes the audience feel connected to the characters. The trailer almost gives away the narrative of the film of two young people who fell in love in university but went their separate ways and moved on, however it does make the audience feel their emotions and gives a sense of happiness when they are together at the end.

The film 'Orphan' is a sub-genre of thriller/psychological horror and the target audience would be 15-25 year olds, because it contains some violent and disturbing scenes. The parallel sound used throughout the trailer is appropriate for this film as it  creates a lot of tension, making the audience speechless with watching the horrific things that family is going through due the girl. This makes the audience hooked on in wanting to watch more, to find out what happens. The different setting of the trailer, conveys realism which shows that the film is well budgeted and the low key lighting used in some parts of the clip is effective as it makes the audience aware, that the little girl is dangerous.

  • Both trailers, give away most of the narrative of the film, which would make the audience aware of what the film is going to be about and if it is worth watching or not.
16. How does the trailer for Fish Tank balance plot and spectacle?
The trailer of the Fish Tank shows the life of a young teenager who is facing problems and has a dream of being a dancer however, she cannot fulfill her dreams because of her deprived background. Also, the trailer balances the plot and spectacle not in a good way because some of the audience might get confused with the storyline.

17. How do the trailers for your other films balance plot and spectacle? Identify at least 2 similarities and 2 differences.
Both of the trailers balance plot and spectacle through intriguing the audience about what is going to happen on later on throughout the film.

18. Think about the certificate of Fish Tank (15 certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
The film Fish Tank certificate was 15, which I think is suitable. This is because in the film, there was only two sexual scenes however it was not in a strong detail, almost continuous swearing, a bit of reference of nudity.
Differences: 18 certificate contains a lot of violence, sexual activity, drug taking etc, where as in a 15 certificate there can be a a bit of sexual context however it cannot be detailed and must be appropriate. Also, Drug taking can be shown however it cannot be promoted or encourage drug misuse

Extension: Come up with you own idea for a narrative for a film with a budget of £5m for a mainstream 16-25 youth audience. Write a short synopsis and decide who would star in your cast and why.

Shot Synopsis: The narrative of my film which targets the mainstream 16-25 youth audience, would be about a teenage girl from the age of 16 who is from a middle class family and is facing a lot of family problems at home as her parents get a divorce, which causes her stress and leads to depressing therefore she begins to develop an eating disorder from this. However, later on as the narrative develops, she meets a guy who she falls in love with and supports/helps her with her problems. This would be effective, because some of the audience, specifically girls could relate to some of the problems the protagonist is facing and feel connected to her. The actress I would use to play the main protagonist for my film would be 'Felicity Jones' as she has starred in other popular films. However, the most successful film she starred in as the main character is 'Like Crazy' which is my favourite film and from that film she won four awards.

Uses and Gratification from my film would be:
  • Escapism: The audience would be able to forget about their daily routine and  focus on the film.
  • Entertainment: They would be able to feel relaxed, shed a tear or laughter and just be able to enjoy watching the film.
  • Identity: This would be important because the audience can relate to the problems and feel as if they are in the position of that character and knows what she is going through; feeling connected to the protagonist.
